레스보스 섬의 시인 사포.

이야기는 많이 들어보았지만 그의 시를 직접 읽어본 사람은 사포의 명성에 비하면 턱없이 적을 듯 하다.

 

7월에 철학사 스터디를 하면서 고대 그리스 철학 부분에 사포에 대한 언급이 나오길래 사포를 우리 스터디의 첫 주자로 정하게 되었다.

 

사포의 시 중 무엇을 읽을까 선정하는 과정에서 놀랐던 점은, 그의 시가 그래도 조금은 남아서 전해진다는 점이다. 

물론, 중간중간 찢어지고 유실되어서 부분적인 시들이 대부분이며, 그가 직접 남긴 시가 아닌 인용으로 전해진다는 사실이 아쉬운 점이다.

고대 그리스의 다른 자료들, 예를 들면 아리스톨레스와 플라톤과 그 외의 존경받은 남성들의 자료들은 그대로 내려져 오는 것과는 대조적이다. (심지어 그의 생애에 관련된 정확한 자료도 거의 찾을 수 없다. 오직 전설 뿐.)

 

시31은 질투의 시로도 불린다. 그의 작품 중 가장 많이 사랑받는 시다. 이 시를 스터디의 첫 작품으로 정했다.

 

영문 번역본: 

 

영문 번역본1:

            That man to me seems equal to the gods,

            the man who sits opposite you

            and close by listens

            to your sweet voice

 

5          and your enticing laughter—

            that indeed has stirred up the heart in my breast.

            For whenever I look at you even briefly

            I can no longer say a single thing,

 

            but my tongue is frozen in silence;

10        instantly a delicate flame runs beneath my skin;

            with my eyes I see nothing;

            my ears make a whirring noise.

 

            A cold sweat covers me,

            trembling seizes my body,

15        and I am greener than grass.

이것이 시31 (영어로는 fragment 31)의 흔히 쓰이는 번역본이다. 비교적 현대에 번역된 것으로, Julia Dubnoff에 의해 번역되었다. 이것에 해당하는 번역본은 논문: 박영희(2019).사포의 시에 나타난 사랑의 의미. 서양고전학연구,58(1),1-23 페이지 13에 실려있다. 논문 내용이 무척 재미있고, 찾으면 나오는 몇 안되는 사포와 그의 시에 대한 논문이다.

 

그리스어를 영어로 번역한 것이기 때문에 사포의 시는 버전이 여러개이며, 번역하는 사람들에 따라 시가 매우 다르다. 

그렇기 때문에 다른 번역본 하나를 텍스트에 추가하여 대조하며 스터디를 진행했다.

 

영문번역본2: 

Peer of Gods to me is the man thy presence
Crowns with joy; who hears, as he sits beside thee,
Accents sweet of thy lips the silence breaking,
             With lovely laughter;

 

Tones that make the heart in my bosom flutter,
For if I, the space of a moment even,
Near to thee come, any word I would utter
             Instantly fails me;

 

Vain my stricken tongue would a whisper fashion,
Subtly under my skin runs fire ecstatic;
Straightway mists surge dim to my eyes and leave them
             Reft of their vision;

 

Echoes ring in my ears; a trembling seizes
All my body bathed in soft perspiration;
Pale as grass I grow in my passion's madness,
             Like one insensate;

 

But must I dare all, since to me unworthy,
Bliss thy beauty brings that a God might envy;
Never yet was fervid woman a fairer
             Image of Kypris.

 

Ah! undying Daughter of God, befriend me!
Calm my blood that thrills with impending transport;
Feed my lips the murmur of words to stir her
             Bosom to pity;

 

Overcome with kisses her faintest protest,
Melt her mood to mine with amorous couches,—
Till her low assent and her sigh's abandon
             Lure me to rapture.

이것은 번역본1에 비해 더 길고, 번역가의 자의적인 표현이 더 들어간 듯 하다. 번역가는 John Myers O'Hara이다.

번역본2가 더 길고 어려우므로, 우리는 이것을 중점적으로 토의했다.

 

번역본2:

영시는 소설에 비해 진입장벽이 높다. 처음에 읽으면 뭔말을 하는지 파악이 힘들기 때문이다. 

그래서 영시를 혼자 읽으면 정말 재미도 없고 얻는 것도 없다.

 

도움이 되는 방법은, 문장 구조를 바꿔보는 것이다.

우리가 쓰는 영어문장구조로 주어, 동사, 목적어 등을 재배열해보면 시의 내용을 파악할 수 있다.

 

 

밑의 텍스트는 번역본2를 재배열한 후 해석해본 것이다.

your sweet speech and your lovely laughter breaking the silence.

당신의 면전에 앉은 저 남자는 나에게 신과 필적해 보인다. 

그는 당신의 옆에 앉에 당신의 달콤한 이야기와, 고요함을 깨는 당신의 사랑스러운 웃음소리를 듣는다.

Tones that make the heart in my bosom flutter,
since for me, if you come near,

any utterance I make would instantly fail me at that moment.

그 어조는 나의 가슴 속 심장을 빠르게 펄떡이게 만든다.

나에게 있어서는, 당신이 가까이 다가온다면

내가 입 밖에 내는 그 어떤 것도 그 순간에 즉시 나를 배신할 것이기 때문이다.
